This line of clothing is just so adorable that I had to share it with you right away! We don’t have their items listed on our website yet so until then I thought I would post some photos in case you might still be looking for some Christmas gifts.

These are 100% organic cotton lounge sets, which includes a longsleeve onesie or shirt and long pants.

They come in sizes 3-6 months, 6-12 months, and 12-18 months. Sizes 3-6 and 6-12 are onesies, and size 12-18 months is a longsleeve shirt.

Check out the adorable Christmas print, perfect for a boy or a girl:

Trouble $39 for the set

And finally, Sweetpea. It doesn’t get more organic than that!

Sweetpea $39 for the set

WHY ORGANIC?

Anything with the word “organic” in it has become very popular, but do you know why choosing organic cotton is so important? Non-organically grown cotton is extremely detrimental to the environment. I found some great information and statistics at this website: www.aboutorganiccotton.org

Conventionally grown cotton:

  • accounts for half of the world’s textile sales
  • uses roughly a third of a pound of pesticides and fertilizers to produce enough cotton for a single t-shirt
  • consumes approximately 25% of the insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides used in the world
  • typically treats seeds with fungicides or insecticides
  • uses genetically modified seeds for approximately 70% of US-grown cotton
  • requires intensive irrigation
  • applies synthetic fertilizers
  • applies herbicides to soil to inhibit weed growth and to kill weeds that do grow
  • is harvested by defoliating with toxic chemicals

Whereas Organically Grown Cotton:

  • uses untreated seeds
  • never uses genetically modified seeds
  • builds strong soil through crop rotation
  • uses less water because the soil retains more water thanks to increased organic matter
  • weeds are removed physically, not through chemical destruction
  • weeds are controlled through cultivation and hand hoeing
  • uses beneficial insects, biological and cultural practices to control pests
  • is harvested by relying on the seasonal freeze or water management for defoliaton

So if you want to buy a cute new outfit as a gift for a little baby or toddler, look for 100% organic cotton clothing so that you are contributing to a healthier planet for them when they grow up! It makes the gift that much more special, and shows that you care :)

We are excited to carry this high quality line of clothing by Parade that “is an adorable melody of modern, earth inspired colours, curious characters and everlasting images. Simple yet playful, our products embody the sweetness and merriment of babies and toddlers alike.” And they are designed in Vancouver, Canada!

A day worth celebrating

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Happy March 17!

Today is indeed a day worth celebrating, and here are 3 good reasons why:

1) here in Windsor, Ontario, the temperature is going to reach a high of 18 degrees Celsius this afternoon (woohoo!!)

2) it’s St. Patrick’s Day, so even though it’s not a holiday it still kind of feels like one, and….

3) today is the first day of the bumGenius 4.0 spring sale!

The bumGenius 4.0 is one of my personal all-time favourite diapers, and it is also one of our top-selling diapers. For 4 days only (until this Sunday) they are more than 15% off

bumGenius All-In-One Sale

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

We are clearing out all of our remaining bumGenius all-in-ones and they are 20% off!

These are excellent diapers but you may have heard that Cotton Babies has discontinued them. I don’t believe the discontinuation has anything to do with the quality of these diapers. I think it is probably more due to the fact that they are sized diapers, and can’t compete with the popularity of the other bumGenius diapers that are one-size such as the bumGenius 4.0 and the bumGenius Elemental.

The bumGenius all-in-ones are sized small (8-15 lbs), medium (15-22 lbs) and large (22-30 lbs). They are a very nice trim fit and they are a very convenient because there is no stuffing required.

I will be sad to see them no longer available! The sale will continue while supplies last.

Natural Toys

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Babies love putting things in their mouths and chewing and drooling all over stuff, so it makes sense that we need to seriously look at what they are putting in their mouths!
Plastic toys are everywhere. We hear about the dangers of BPA and Phthalates that are now banned from drinking bottles and dishes. But how can you be sure that these harmful chemicals aren’t in toys and other things that baby likes to suck and nibble on?

At Sweetheart Diapers & More we are happy to provide an array of toys that we know are safe, including
made-from-corn teethers
organic cotton toys
and unbelievably soft bamboo plush toys.

I’d like to share with you a breakdown of some great products we carry and why they are so great!

RiNGLEY Natural Teething Toys:

Each RiNGLEY has two parts that are both great for teething babies:
1) Untreated Canadian maple wood
2) 100% organically grown cotton

A note about organic cotton: what’s the big deal?
Did you know: Conventionally grown cotton (not organic) is responsible for approximately 25%!!! of the world’s insecticide use!
Another cotton fact:
“Conventional farming devours roughly a third of a pound of pesticides and fertilizers to produce enough cotton for a single T-shirt” – http://www.aboutorganiccotton.org/woven-world.html

Wow! Doesn’t that make you think twice about choosing an organic cotton product vs. a non-organic cotton product?

Believe! Organic Plush Toys

The Believe collection includes adorable rhino, elephant, and polar bear which are made of organic and natural materials which are healthier for our children and our environment. Let’s get kids off to a green start while teaching them about these great animals.

Bamboo Zoo

The Bamboo Zoo plush animals and hand puppets are a Bamboo Velour made with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified bamboo viscose

Corn Teething Keys

These look like traditional plastic toy keys, but they’re made out of cornstarch!
This means they are completely BPA-free, Phthalate-free, PVC-free, and Lead-free.
PLUS corn is a renewable and sustainable resource. Neat!

BecoPotty Eco-Friendly Potty

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

This is the coolest potty, I love showing it to people when they come into the store.

The beco potty is an eco-friendly potty that is made out of plant waste and is completely biodegradable.

It is made out of bamboo and rice husks and is molded with a resin that makes it hard so it looks and feels just like plastic.
BUT…
When you no longer need it, simply plant it in the garden and it will biodegrade in just a few years!

Isn’t that amazing?
Plus they are only $15.99

It is available in natural, blue, and pink.

Nighttime Solutions for bedwetting kids

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

We have reached the point at home where our daughter is outgrowing her regular sized cloth diapers. She has been potty trained during the day for quite a while, but is still a very heavy wetter at night. She is 3 years old, and weighs somewhere between 35-40 lbs.

Our two nighttime cloth diapering solutions until now have been:
-a bumGenius 4.0 with an extra hemp doubler and/or
-a Mother-Ease All-in-one with a Sandy’s stay-dry absorbent liner

Both methods have given us excellent results with no leaking, but in the last few weeks, she has officially outgrown the Mother-ease AIO when it’s stuffed with an extra liner, and she just barely still fits in her bumGenius on the largest setting.

I didn’t think my daughter, who started peeing on the potty at 18 months, would still be in diapers at almost 3.5 years old, and that we would have this problem with her outgrowing the largest sizes!

Thankfully, there are some great overnight diapers that are designed just for kids!

WE’VE NOW SWITCHED TO BEDWETTER NIGHTTIME UNDIES.

They are for kids between 30-65 lbs who wet at night. They are WAY MORE absorbent than cloth diapers that are geared for babies up to 35 lbs. They are amazingly absorbent! You can save a lot of money by using these over disposable overnight pull-ups. You only need 3 or 4 and then just wash and use them over and over again!

We’re using both the Mother-ease Bedwetter Pant

and the Super Undies Nighttime Undies

and we’ve had great success with both of them.

They are both pull-up style so the child doesn’t need any help getting them on by themself. They are super absorbent because they are designed for children who weigh between 30-65 lbs.
We found equal success with both brands, and I don’t have a preference over either one.

Mother-ease is made in Canada, which is great! It is only available in white.

Super Undies are American made, come in a variety of colours, and they have a pocket opening where you can add even more additional absorbency if your child is a super super heavy wetter.

The only downside I can think of (and it isn’t even a downside) is that they take FOREVER to dry after you wash them. This just goes to show you how absorbent they are :)

Rockin Green ROCKS

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Washing cloth diapers with an HE machine can be tricky. I bought an HE machine 1 week before my daughter was born, since I knew we’d be using cloth diapers. And doing laundry at my mother-in-law’s wasn’t going to cut it anymore once baby arrived.

If I had to do it again knowing what I know, I could have saved a lot of money and just purchased a used top-loader for $100. I wanted an HE machine, because they are better on water usage and electricity. I didn’t know that they are not as good at getting cloth diapers clean! (our machine doesn’t have an option to adjust water level the way a top loader does).

It has been a continuous battle with keeping our diapers smell-free and really clean. And as a cloth diaper advocate, I don’t want people complaining that my own daughter’s diapers are stinky!

I finally figured out how to get a really good clean wash with my HE machine. Since washing machines are all different, you really have to experiment with your own machine. For example, it’s easy for someone to say “just do an overnight soak”, but what if your machine doesn’t have a setting to choose a soak? Everyone has their own washing routine that works for them and their machines. The secret is to find out what works best for you. Learn how your machine works. I never actually took the time to sit in front of my washing machine to see what it actually does. I think I have found my secret, finally! Here is what I did:

#1. Put 2 tbsp of Rockin Green Classic Rock into machine (normally I only use 1 tbsp)

#2. Select a wash cycle on HOT water with soil level “high” (I didn’t select “pre-wash”, which I normally do)

#3. I sat in front of the machine and watched it work. I got a glass of wine and got comfy. My husband found me down in the laundry room watching the washing machine with a glass of wine and I had to explain my experiment to him so that he didn’t think I was going crazy. (Unfortunately, I think he still thought I was a little crazy even after I explained to him what I was doing. But whatever, guys just don’t get it! I’m not weird ok? I swear.) I watched it fill with water twice. I couldn’t believe how little water it uses! No wonder my diapers weren’t getting super clean. After about 12 -15 min. I decided it probably wasn’t going to add any more water, so now was my moment to hit “pause”. I was done my glass of wine, and I went to bed.

#4.  Morning: the machine had automatically shut off overnight. I turned it back on, added no detergent, and selected a hot wash again (no pre-wash, it didn’t need it after soaking all night), plus an extra rinse. I went to work.

#5. Came home from work and went down to my laundry room to inspect the diapers. I stuck my nose into the diapers and smelled as hard as I could. I smelled…NOTHING!!! Woohoo!!

I’m thinking I will probably only have to do this trick once a week to keep stinkies at bay. My diapers weren’t very stinky, only a little (my daughter only wears diapers overnight now). For really stinky diapers, Rockin Green just came out with a new product, FUNK ROCK which is specifically formulated to combat the stinkies. I was going to try it next, but now I don’t even need it!

Next time I do the overnight soak trick, I won’t have to sit in front of the machine and wait because now I know what my machine does. I can just turn on the laundry and set the oven timer for 12 min. and then run down to the basement and hit pause when the timer goes.

Oh, and Rockin Green is phosphate free and tree hugger approved !!

It comes in YUMMY flavours, I mean SCENTS, too! (Keep it away from the kids, they might want to taste it…I must admit I’m a little tempted every time, it just reminds me so much of Lik’M Aid! The scents definitely make the laundry experience a little more FUN! )

-Smashing WATERMELONS – yummm!

-Rage Against the RASPBERRIES – yummmm! (can you tell I’m a fan of the sweet stuff)

-The Plain Green Tea’s

-Lavender Mint Revival

-Mighty Mighty Marshmallows – I haven’t smelled this one yet…!

-Motley Clean

-and Bare Naked Babies for when you want something scent-free

*Rockin Green says you only have to soak for 30-60 min. Partially the reason I did overnight was because it was late and I wanted to go to bed, not stay up late waiting for the laundry!

This is what a bag of Rockin Green laundry detergent looks like:

Rockin Green Soap Classic Rock

You can also try Rockin Green Hard Rock, which is a formula specifically for areas with HARD WATER.

A bag of Rockin Green Soap will do about 45 loads of laundry for a top loader, and 90 loads of laundry for an HE machine.

This is what a bag of Funk Rock looks like:

Funk Rock - the ammonia buster!

Rockin Green also has Magnetic Measuring Spoons. These are such a great idea. You can stick one right to your laundry machine so you don’t have to worry about losing it, plus you can keep it in your laundry room so that you don’t have to use your kitchen measuring spoon.
